Although my book, River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood, is primarily about my 1940s-'50s West Virginia Appalachian boyhood, I'm certain Vietnam veterans and others would enjoy the final chapter, "Deliverance," which tells about my tour of duty in Di An, Vietnam (1965-66), with the 1st Infantry Division. If you wish to read "Deliverance," then click on the website. Once you have read "Deliverance," I do hope you will share your thoughts in my guestbook. Thanks.

I was stationed at tay ninh & was a mine sweeper on the road from tay ninh to dau tieng every day so the supply convoy could reach dau tieng. was also a 5 ton dump truck driver after my sweeping days were over. I was all over the area around nui ba den & also on top & used to haul stone & laterite from the quarry at the base of the mountain. I have a question about the shield part of the insignia shown at the top of this page. As a lapel pin, is the shield part specific to the 1st Engineers, or would that have been the lapel pin for all Engineer Combat Battalions? My Dad served with both the 327th (during WWII) and then the 1st Engineers during the Occupation period. Would the 327th have had this same lapel pin?

Web Captain's comment   Laurie,
The shield and the crest shown on this website are both specific to the 1st Engineer Battalion.
